    MTU 2011 Ford Raptor Build

This build will start out pretty mild. This truck is my DD and intended to be my H3 delivery (once I get the right trailer) and rescue vehicle. It has already rescued the 3 from DI once.

I purchased the truck July 3rd of 2011. I ordered the truck May 23rd of 2011. I won't forget that because as soon as I walked in the door from ordering the truck, my wife went into labor with my son. The official order date and my son's birthday are both May 24, 2011. Originally I ordered Navigation, and a few other options, however, because of the earthquake and floods in Japan that year, Navigation options were being reserved for other models. Needing a truck, I went forward with the order, otherwise I would have had to wait another 6 months for the 2012 MY to be available. Knowing what I know now, I wish I would have... 2012 came with a Torsen front differential, oh well.

That fall I added a Ford Performance parts font light bar with Hella 550 Lights. Same that I run on the H3 (Later I changed the bulbs to Hella Optilux Yellow).

    DSCI0199.jpg

I have gone ahead and added a CB radio to the dash too, antenna is mounted in the bed. Lately I have been running with the antenna off.

While I am waiting for my custom brake hoses to come in and finish the spring over on the H3, I have fabricated a set of bed racks for the Raptor. The intent of these racks is to hold the spare tire in the bed, not under the truck, and provide a tie down for auxiliary fuel. I designed these to also have space for storage underneath. I built 3 sets, one for my truck and 2 more for other owners. The other owners will be attending a UP snow event with me later in January.

I will post up more pics later once I have them painted and everything else installed.

Here is one of the bed racks installed. I am still prototyping this a bit and adding more goodies to it. It now has attachment points for a Farm Jack too.

I don't think it will ever be finished. Next additions will be whatever I win (hopefully) in the raffle at the event I am going to next weekend. Could be freaking awesome, or awesome all depends on how the names come out of the hat

Re: MTU 2011 Ford Raptor Build

Since I last posted an update on the Raptor I have traveled over 500 miles in Michigan's UP on various trails and terrain. Weather was GREAT!

When we came home, I could not shake the itch to get out more with the Raptor. Over the next couple months I have partnered with a few other companies and have begun to run the Raptor in the Detroit SCCA Rallycross season.

There is not a truck class, I run in the Stock AWD class, so I compete against Audis. Subarus, and Talons. I did really well for my first time out. I took 7 out of 11, beating the 8th place car by 8 seconds. I knocked 8 seconds off my lap times between my first and last lap. I was only 2 seconds from 5th, and had I run every lap like my last lap, I would have finished third. Not too bad for a 6100 lb truck on a RallyX circuit

Re: MTU 2011 Ford Raptor Build

Sooooo, three weeks ago the rear shocks were stolen off my truck as it sat in my driveway. I guess some one needed them more.

I worked with Jack Demmer Ford, insurance company and RPG (Raptor performance Group) to get some replacements. The OE shocks are still on back order, I didn't want to put used ones on from the internet. So we upgraded to RPGs custom tuned Fox 3.0 triple bypass shocks. The ride is so much better now, but I might have to adjust it before the next RallyX race. The rear end seems to want to roll a bit too much now.

Carl, those R' Sum Purdy shocks. Zoomed right past the double bypass to the triples! They should offer some great control for your RallyX racing and nice performance for the street too.

This is helping me work with Fox a little closer, so I am toying around some ideas for the front suspension on the H3. Really early research stages, so I will keep you guys posted.

Re: MTU 2011 Ford Raptor Build

OK, well here is an update on this truck.

A few weeks ago I installed a frame re-enforcement kit and Fox 2.0 gas bump stops. The purpose of this mod is to strengthen the frame on the Raptor (as a just in case need in certain situations) and the gas bump stops absorb the energy from the suspension better. The stops come from Fox charged to 200 psi, but I have them down at 90 psi. These are the same bump stops I am looking to develop on the front end of the H3.

I also have had some exhaust work done by MRT (Mustang Racing Technologies) here in Plymouth. The truck sounds much more appropriate now and they did a great job. I have been thinking of adding their "drone management" system to the H3 exhaust also.

Ronald over at this company has a supercharged Raptor with the first MRT exhaust made on it that was developed on my truck. If i have something made for the H3, he can get you the system. He is an MRT dealer too.

Re: MTU 2011 Ford Raptor Build

I added a couple more things to the truck this weekend.

Proven Design Products Mud flaps: This company is located in New Hudson, MI; moving to Brighton. They offer a number of products for snowmobiles and trucks. Matt, the owner, gave me a template piece to work on fitting to the H3... so stay turned for that.

Picture below is something of a before and after. All the dried on mud was before the mud flap, the wet spots are the after install. Big difference, should have done this years ago.

    1975266_554124294704421_2018094917_n.jpg

Next is a rear sway bar from Hellwig. The Raptor does not come with a rear sway bar from the factory, so Hellwig developed one. It is only 3/4" in diameter, so it offers a good amount of flex. For how I use the truck, around town and rallycross racing, squaring up the rear end on turn exit helps a lot. Very easy to disconnect one of the links to get full flex back. Also will be working with them on new Sway bar links for the H3. Stay tuned.

Re: MTU 2011 Ford Raptor Build

I did wonder why the Raptor didn't have a rear sway bar will all the high speed stuff it is touted to be built for.

Nice work on trying to get some more H3/H3T friendly parts out there. New sway bar with quick disconnects for the front with a custom bend so we don't scrape it with 35"+ tires would be nice also. I'd pay for that one! (actually 2)

Thats my thought too MU. We might be able to correct some of the rubbing issues by going to a longer link, getting the sway bar level with the ground as intended. I know a few people mentioned there was less rub when adding 35" tires without adjusting the torsion keys.

Re: MTU 2011 Ford Raptor Build

    A few more updates.

Yes, I do still work on the 3, right now the entire front suspension is on the floor of the garage, ad will be replaced. It is just taking a long time to cut all the seized and rusted bolts out. Torsion bars not cooperating either.

In order to keep one vehicle running, I have had to do some work to the raptor too. Both stock coilover bit the dust recently, so I picked up a set of ICON Vechicle Dynamics 3.0 coil overs. These are bigger than the stock coilovers, and also have speed variable adjustments with the turn of a knob. Yes, I can get the stock ones rebuilt by Fox, but I would have been down to one vehicle for at least two weeks, and between shipping and labor, spent half of what I spend on these guys. These are also adjustable perch settings, so a few turns from a spanner wrench and the truck is sitting level, no more rake.

I don't have any pics of them on the floor, but here you can see where the remote resi gets located. The adjustment knob is located there. I am going to see what I can do for the H3 with these guys as I rebuild the H3, I have to cut a few pieces off the Bisteins I was using.

    10372549_10100114657931447_8886250795425053139_n.jpg

Two days after the new coilovers went in, I had more issues, the truck still seemed loose. Both upper ball joints were toast, and just like the H3.... non serviceable, yup, I have to replace the whole upper... and pull the shocks I just put in. Well lucky I was able to get the first set of TIGed 2 piece UCAs from Special Vehicle Concepts, the same guys that built Ken Block's Raptor Trax. I found a few short cuts to save some time, and made a couple bone head ones that cost me some time. All in all, the truck is tighter and feels more responsive that it ever did. Very happy. I also heard that SVC is working with a customer in Cali on some Hummer stuff. so may be we will get lucky.

I clear coated these to show off the arms a bit better.

I've heard that ICON makes some great stuff.

I'm not sold on an A arm with heims. Yes they are replaceable but how often will you have to replace them? From what I can see there wouldn't be any dampening. Straight, metal to metal contact. Do you feel everything you roll over and every little expansion joint, etc?

Re: MTU 2011 Ford Raptor Build

The whole front end feels really tight now, a bit of a sports car feel on a truck. I have to spend a little more time tuning in the front shocks now. So far I like the way it drives. I do need to get the truck aligned, but there are a couple other things I want to tweak before I take it in.

I may need to look at new wheels, a few interference items at the ball joint and arm with the stock wheels. Nothing new, normally larger offset wheels are needed when going to a 1.5" bearing. SVC is looking at 1.0" bearing that I might swap mine out for.

I debated on the heims vs bushing design. Bushing would have been an easier install, and easier to drop the truck off at the dealer for an alignment. Ford uses the LCA for alignment, the uppers are fixed. I have not been a fan of that set up because more than once I and others have knocked the LCAs out of alignment. Once I have things set, I will Net the lower arms and use the heims above for the alignment. That is the biggest reason I went that route. I have one other issue to resolve on the truck to make the alignment even easier, but I have to find a way to relocat the master cylinder on the frame. Probably head over the MRT to see what they can help me design.

I have talked with the engineer and other guys at ICON, they have a lot of experience in all forms of off-roading, Fox does too of course, but being able to meet these guys at events, talk about projects, and just there service and response was what sold me on switching over. They also have a hydraulic bump stop that is about the same size as the Light Racing Kit, so I may look at one of those systems on the front next year. Goal on the H3 this year is to get it back on the road, and keep the Ford on the road....

Funny, this truck never came with a under hood lighting. I hooked up a couple KC HiLites cycloes under the hood. I picked Red because it fit where I am going to go with the truck, but they are available in Red, Blue, White, Green, and Amber.
